Never did I think that I would write a post about a Zoo but never did I imagine I would see one as amazing as Artis Zoo, Amsterdam. Firstly this zoo is in the middle of the city centre, I know, a zoo in the centre of a city! But that isn’t all that makes this zoo stand out from the rest.
The Zoo appears from nowhere, you are walking down your usual cobbled Amsterdam street and suddenly you are confronted by large iron gates which are the gateway to this amazing place.
What I loved about this Zoo was that the animals have so much more freedom then a lot of other Zoos I have visited and you get to see the animals enjoy this.
Their space is open and is adapted to their Natural habitat and the monkeys even roamed free although you were warned to watch out for your belongings – we all know what monkeys can be like!
There were waterfalls, ponds, rocks, sand and every corner of the zoo showed you a different type of animal and a different type of habitat. The animals were stunning and I got the opportunity to see animals that I had never seen before or even knew existed.
Sadly because of how late in the day we arrived we only got to spend a couple of hours in the zoo although I could have happily spent all day there.
This zoo is wonderful and the least tourist like zoo I think I have ever been too, there are no stalls or shops etc. as you wonder around (unlike most British zoos) it is just yourself and the animals…Perfect!
So if you are passing through Amsterdam, make sure that this zoo in on your itinerary. It really is a hidden gem.
